Dear all,

After Herr Cypionka's insightful 3D work on a Surrirella, I'd like to show this related diatom. It is also twisted shape which from memory seemed very close to what Herr Cypionka showed. In any case it is just as difficult to image the saddle shape of this diatom, and the cell contents also didn't help getting a clear through view.

Mostly they fall to the bottom of the chamber in this orientation, and it is hard to envisage the whole outline of the diatom:

Only when you start poking it with a needle, you get a glimpse of how it looks like in 3D:

But you'll have to be quick to take images as it falls back to it's preferred side-view immediately.

Images taken on an Oly-inverted with 20/0.7 and Coolpix990. Sample from July 2007, lugol preserved material from the Eems estuary. Wole diatom is ca 100 um across

Lieber Rene,

danke für die schöne Bilderserie dieser stark gewölbten Diatomee. So bekommt man doch einen Eindruck wie sie insgesamt aussieht.

Liebe Grüße

Dear René,

thank you for these pictures! Definetely, alive is nicer than dead ;-) And the images have a higher depth of focus than those I used for stacking (by purpose with open condenser lens). Thus, one can get a good impression of the structure without 3-D technique.
