Titel: I didn't get a SEM for Christmas...
Beitrag von: Beatsy in Januar 01, 2024, 15:24:59 NACHMITTAGS
...so I'll just pretend that I did ;D

A happy accident from a 100x focus stack, inverted to negative in post-processing.

I like the way the pores actually look like holes, for a change.

Not perfectly SEM-like of course, but similar. Maybe some day I won't need to fake it.

Cheers

Hello and happy new year,
i like this picture not really for imitating a SEM. Fascinating are the crisp pores AND the fine inside structures of the frustules cross in this stack. Did you use some (special) deconvolution methods?
Regards Stefan

Hi Steve,
I think you are a person which really does not need a SEM😀.
Wonderful image of I think Stauroneis acuta. I searched in the web for a SEM image of it, but without success.
Best

Hi Steve
I am also a friend of these inverted photos. With every diatomee it doesn't give the impression of an SEM shot. But in this case, the Stauroneis spec., the resemblance is already very good. It's also very much down to the photographer. ;)
I am thrilled. 8)

Hi Stefan, Anne and Siegfried. Thanks for your comments.

Stefan:
No deconvolution, just tone-mapping to stretch contrast and a frequency separation technique for sharpening. I used Affinity Photo 2.0 for both - but they're supported in Photoshop and other image editing apps. They're not magic tools though - you need high-resolution images that are reasonably sharp to start with.

This shows how to do FS sharpening in Affinity --> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkCBc7E0O1k

Anne:
Your identification is correct. I'm glad you couldn't find a real SEM image though. It would instantly prove my image is nothing like SEM quality! ;D

Siegfried:
You're right, this doesn't work with all diatom species, or even many. I think the larger pores were the key to getting a reasonable SEM "look" here.

Cheers
