Hi all,
I want to show some pictures from an algae that grows on a waterplant in an aquarium, epiphytic it seems. During inspection under the microscope I immediately thought about filamentous cyanobacteria. But are they? And which one?

The smaller filaments look a bit like Calothrix or Hapalosiphon but the thick "tree trunk-like" filaments I cannot find anywhere. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated, thanks. Images taken with 20/0.40 objective. Best regards,
Rolf
I would say Stigonema, but do not know the group well enough. It's not Calothrix, they have typical heterocysts on the base of the trichome.
My two cents, Rene.
Thanks, Rene. I found a picture on the internet of Stigonema sp that indeed looks very much like the one in my pictures. Best regards,
Rolf
Hello,
I do not believe that this a cyano at all. It would rather be a red algae, something like Comsopogon spec. For an example look here: http://www.dr-ralf-wagner.de/Rotalgen-englisch.html

Yes, that is it! Thanks for the clarification Ralf.
Rene
Hi Ralf, thank you for solving this. Best regards,
Rolf
