Polarized light foil has become cheaply available and allows to make beautiful pictures of simple materials.(https://www.mikroskopie-forum.de/pictures002/46068_53333617.jpg) shows protoxylem of Cucurbita stem under polarized light, followed by white light(https://www.mikroskopie-forum.de/pictures002/46068_39194681.jpg).
Pear sklerenchym shows quite a different image when seen in polarized light (https://www.mikroskopie-forum.de/pictures002/46068_63478077.jpg) than in white light(https://www.mikroskopie-forum.de/pictures002/46068_52464333.jpg).
It may not be very new, but it will remain enjoyable.
