Diatoms: a sense of scale

Diatoms meet the dentist.

Here are a few diatoms placed in the end of a dentist's hypodermic needle. It looks shiny to the eye, but more like a scaffolding pole up close. Most of the diatoms are from Kamishlov, Russia, though there may be a few from other locations mixed in.

I used a motorised rail and an "extreme macro photography" approach and about 200 images were focus stacked for this picture. Objective lens was a LWD Mitutoyo Plan APO 50x/0.55 mounted on a 200mm tube lens.

Knowledge is cheap. Experience is not.

Hey Steve,
I love it, what makes it particularly different from other "genuine" ultra macro focus stacking shots is the blue rim light. Perfectly executed!
Best regards, Michael
