Nitzschia sp.

Hi guys, found a new diatom. I'm not sure what Nitzschia species, anybody??

Brackish water stuff from the Scheldt estuary, length 70 um, fibulae 5 per 10um. Preserved with lugols.

BTW, anybody a clue what the roundish structures are around the nucleus??

Eine ähnliche Diatomee habe ich am 28-9-2005 in Nieuwpoort an der Ijzer(Belgien) gefunden.Ich habe Sie damals bestimmt als Nitzschia spathulata(W.Smith 1851)mit Algenflora der Ostsee,Plankton(H.Pankow) und Traité des Diatomées(H.Van Heurck).Sie wird auch beschrieben in Iconographia Diatomologica Volume 7.
Die Beschreibungen in diese Bestimmungsbücher stimmen überein mit deine Angaben.
Das Foto:Objektiv imm.100X,Coolpix 995.
Diatomee Länge :72 Micron,Breite:10 Micron.

I think you're right. The problem I is with the description in Witkowski, mentioning "fibulae evenly spaced" (but he does not show an image). Also the old images in Smith and Meunier show very regular fibulae distance. Whereas the fibulae distance in this species is more irregular like N. distans and the var. tumescens. Witkowski shows an image of something like this (Plate 196, fig.9, 10), calling it Nitzschia spec. cf. distans var. tumescens.

Hmm.
