Hi all, while wading through my images I came across a nice looking Caloneis, showing a good deal of intracellular structures. Not long ago Gerd (and Martin) showed similar structures in Pinnularia which turned out to be Golgibodies https://www.mikroskopie-forum.de/index.php?topic=38371.msg282265#msg282265. Always nice to see them structures confirmed in other genera.

Leitz 50x/1.0 waterimmersion objective in a microaquarium, Oly DIC. Arrow point towards a Golgibody in Caloneis amphisbaena.

Enjoy,
René

Hi René,

Nice pictures. I find it quite intriguing that you can actually see these organelles in a living diatom. Thanks for sharing. Best regards,

Rolf

Precies Rolf, who doesn't want to see mitochondria in the size of paramecia ;-)

Fascinating! I will keep my eyes open for these structures next time I find one of the bigger living diatoms. If you see and capture more of these structures please share them.

Best regards
Wes

Goldfuss

You can clearly see the golgibodies in this video of pinnularia nobilis:

Nice one Goldfuss. Another typical thingy in Pinnularia: at 2 min in your movie small 'holes' show in the chloroplasts. That's the place where endosymbiontic bacteria are dug in. Quite amazing the amount of detail visible within such a simple plant.

Best wishes, René
