Hallo René,

a diatom spore, I think....

Rene

well, the first Kudo for Raymond. It shouldn't be hard now to get to the genus level, and I'll show the rest of the image.

Best wishes, René

Hallo, Rene.

Attheya zachariasi. Ich habe so etwas auch grade im Plankton des Hattsteinweihers gesehen.

Schönen Gruß ais dem Hintertaunus

Well, here's a larger part of the image:

Jan is right, it is Chaetoceros, a marine species of centric diatoms. Spore formation is pretty common in this genus, and very useful for correct identification to species level. In this case, the spore is very characteristic for Chaetoceros lorenzianus. Without the spore, it is often hard to discriminate the vegetative state of this species with C. decipiens, also a pretty common sp. in Dutch and Deutsch coastal waters.

Kurt and Holger, thanks for your input. The outline  in the first image could indeed have been mistaken for Attheya.  Unfortunately, I have never had the luck to observe Attheya resting spores.

Best wishes, René
