Funny Story - How Google found me a Tischmikrotom

Good afternoon dear microscopists!

I always wanted a Tischmikrotom, the ones Swift and other companies used to sell a long time ago, but I could never find one for sale. They are well loved by Pro's like Jörg Weiß, among others.

So a few days ago, just for fun, I asked Google Image Search to match a photo of a Swift one.

Well, it returned an eBay auction in the USA - with the description saying it was a "Support for testing pulling force, with a micrometric movement".

Well, it looked VERY much like a table microtome !!!

They wanted US$ 299, and I made an outrageous offer of US$ 100 - which was promptly accepted.

So they finally sold that strange machine they didn't know what it was for, and I got my table microtome ha ha ha

But I have no clue what brand it is. Anyone has any idea?

Hi Mike,
at first glance it seems like a re-edition of the ancient table microtomes. If well built and sturdy you have made a good purchase.

In fact, the box looks exactly the same! - thank you for the link.

But there are a few subtle differences between the Tempelchene (is the plural correct in German?), and the "catch" seems different from anything else I saw, it is angular, all others, including Leo's, are more rounded (arc-like).

Leo doesn't mention the manufacturer, and in mine there's a sticker, so maybe it is covering a label.

Not that it matters that much, but it is fun to know who made it!

Hi Mike,

You don't need a manual. One click is 20 μm. Easy and reliable.

This kind of microtome was sold under many labels but all of them came from the same factory in Japan.

Yep, one click 20 µm is great. I think I will try to get decent 40 µm cuts.
