Hallo zusammen,

Das Diatomarium hat etwas Schaden genommen. Einige Diatomeen vom Rand haben sich selbstständig
gemacht.

Hi Michael,

An impressive arrangement! Shame about the floaters but I hope the remount goes well for you. Perhaps you can take some comfort in knowing that you are in very, very good company!

The "Universum Diatomacearum Möllerianum" by Johann Diedrich Möller (a 4,026-form arrangement, all different) had to be remounted because his Canada Balsam + Monobromonaphthalene mountant (RI 1.55+) crystallised. The loose forms had to be put back in the same places too, because of the associated document that named and identified them by their positions in the grids. Nightmare!

Cheers

Hi,
sehr schade.

@Beats
As far as I know (and part of it are rumors) Möller wanted to have a higher R.I. to increase resolution and used more Monobromenaphtalene than usual for this slide. This mixture then was more agressive and attacked the mountant and some diatoms started moving and floated. His other slides from the same time with the "normal" mixture are still intact, so that is plausible.
The owner of the slide at that time (Van Heurck) who had payed a fortune for the slide then asked Möller Möller to repair it, but he didn't feel fit for the job anymore due to his advanced age. Van Heurck then replaced the mountant himself with Styrax but did not remount the missing diatoms. As far as I know this partly damaged condition is still how it is today. Compared to what it looked like at the start quite a few diatoms got lost but it is probably still the most impressive diatom arrangement in the world.
I can't imagine the job of having to restore or even just replace the resin for such a slide... A true nightmare...
Best regards,
Jan

Hallo,
