hallo zusammen,
in  diesem Thread tut sich nicht soviel, wie man eigentlich hätte erwarten können. Deshalb hier noch eine (eindeutig optimierbare!!) Darstellung eines Komplexauges des Raubwasserflohs Polyphemus.




Das Auge  ist im Vergleich zum Körper riesig und verleiht dem Viech allein schon das Aussehen eines extraterrestrischen Raumfahrers.



Das nur mal so als Anregung, in dieser Tümpler-Saison (wir hatten mal im März eine Population in unserem Teich, ist aber auch im Juni zu finden) auf diesen Wasserfloh zu achten.

Hallo Holger, hallo Michael,

Dieser Polyphemus pediculus hat 160 Omatidia im Auge (Raubwasserfloh).
Daphnia hat 22 Omatidia im Auge (eine planktonfiltrierende Art).
Am Boden lebende Arten haben weniger als 10 Omatidia.

Wow, this thread shows an amazing variety of eyes! Still anyone here that dares to think simpler thingies are more at the bottom of the evolutionary tree? This dino is not a dinosaurus, but for a unicellular thingy (!) at 66 um long it does also have an eye, is a ferocious predator and hangs out in the sun.


The eye is a well developed piece of engineering, with a lens that reflects the light into the black melanin body. That black body is lined with a retina, made from a thylakoid membrane of a leftover chloroplast. Behind the eye, in the left part of the body some cigar-like bodies can be seen, these are nematocysts that are used to harpoon prey before dragging it into the body lumen. I'm so glad I'm not a little cryptophyte swimming around in the sea with such monsters around

hi Rene,
thanks for showing us this interesting creature. Apart from the question if an unicellular organism´s  photoreceptor may be regarded as an "eye" this photoreceptor thing is new to me. So can You give us the species name or a link to some literature about this critter?
