Hi guys, time for a new mystery object. 40 um diameter, light brackish environment.

Happy guessing,

René

(as usual, replies in Deutsch appreciated)

Rene

Nah, still no guesses. Really nobody out there that has come across this thingy?

Hallo René,
das könnte der kleine Polyp einer Meduse = Qualle sein wie etwa von Craspedacusta, der auch Microhydra genannt wird.

Thanks for the suggestion Ernst, I didn't think of a polyp before. Ist es aber nicht...

I found it back in one of Cilli Willie's books. That is the ultimate give-away, so I'm not going to say anything else  ;D

Best wishes, René

Hallo René,
niemand scheint das zu raten - auch im Amerikanischen Forum nicht! Zusatzrätsel: wer ist Cilli Willie?

Rene

Well, I didn't want to make it too easy  ;D

I'm pretty sure you know him.

Happy guessing, René

Eckhard

Hi Rene,

I just know "Silly Willie" from London cockney slang :D Willie is a male body part necessary to make children and "Silly Willie" means a gay man.

Best regards

Nah Eckhard, that's not what I ment. BTW, I should have omitted the -e it is Cilli Willi, for Wilhelm Foissner.

The right answer came up already, would you believe this is a peritrich ciliate?

Next image is from Foissner, Taxonomische und oecologische Revision der Ciliaten des Saprobiensystems:

His blue book  (Identification and ecology of limnetic plankton ciliates) shows some very good SEM images, one of the few times that the book shows more information than the 4 Bands.

Best wishes,

René

PS, for people wondering why I would place the same images on 2 different fora: I do use the photomacrography site as an upload facility, so I think I should place it there first. However, whatever I show is material sampled in the Netherlands, I find it very important to show it to people in this region of the world.

Eckhard

Wow. I never would have guessed a ciliate. Is "Cilli Willi" WFs nickname? He introduced himself some years ago "call me Willi", reaching out his hand.

Best regards
Eckhard

Hello Eckhard, I got that from Denisia 23 (2008): The Wilhelm Foissner Festschrift, on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

Best wishes,
