Dear All.

I have plenty of slides with the aforementioned globules, often in stripe pattern. Indeed (and luckily) mostly located on the slide surface. Since I started scrupulously cleaning slides and heating slides and strews above 100oC on the hotplate immediately before mounting, I haven't seen them anymore. I'm therefore not sure these precipetates can be attributed to crystallization.
I have Zrax and old Naphrax (NBS) in use. The Naphrax is quite dark, bubbles out quite quickly and sets very hard.

Concerning the dimethylphtalat, it reminded me of remarks by Klaus Kemp. He didn't like to heat his preps to high temperatures (he dried them <100oC), as he didn't like the mountant to become (too) brittle: 'the coverslip might fall off when dropping or tapping the slide'. Brunel might have taken the hint and started adding plasticizer. 6% sounds like a lot though, and I wonder what Bill Dailey has to say on this. In any case, the lowering effect on refraction index is in the order of 0,02 or so, and can therefore be ignored. The holy status of refraction index is overrated in any case, but that might only be in my own humble opinion ;-)

Just my two cents, best wishes,
René

Liebe Diatomisten,

Hallo Anne,
ich nehme an Du hast dieses "paper":

Journal of the Royal Microscopical Society
Naphrax: A Synthetic Mounting Medium Of High Refractive Index New And Improved Methods Of Preparation
William D. Fleming F. R. M. S.
First published: March 1954
https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1365-2818.1954.tb02001.x

Auf Seite 44:
Working Solution:
The resin prepared above may be dissolved in xylene, toluene, or benzene to any
desired working viscosity. The writer has come to prefer toluene, since such a solution
has not the tendency to skin over that benzene solutions have, and mounts from the
toluene solution harden more quickly than do those from the xylene solution. To lessen
the risk of mounts separating from the glass with age, addition of a plasticizer to the
pure resin may be advisable. Dibutyl phthalate, triphenyl phosphate or tricresyl
phosphate in amounts up to 1 p.c. (1% !?) of the resin may be used
. These have given no evidence
of affecting the optical qualities or the stability of mounts. The writer has used dibutyl
phthalate, 1 c.c. to 100 g. resin
, throughout his experience with the medium.

The product obtained by the new methods here described appears to be the same
optically and chemically as. that given by the original process. So far as may be judged
from seven years' use, the new product appears to be as stable and permanent a mounting
medium as the original resin. The new method of purification seems to remove the
darker coloured and fluorescent by-products more thoroughly. It is more convenient
and cheaper. The synthesis at a higher temperature but in a lower concentration of
sulphuric acid proceeds more rapidly but is less likely to produce a dark coloured resin.
The refractive index is the same by either method : about 1.7 in the hardened mount.

Hallo Helmut,
Daher müssten hier andere User Ihre Erfahrungen teilen.

Hi René,

thanks for the hint pertaining to the effect of dimethylphtalate on the refractive index, which seems to be quite low. I have a half empty 500 ml bottle of DPX New from Merck; expiration date 2017/09/30. The original DPX (Dibutylphthalate Polystyrene Xylene) is no longer available. Merck has changed the specification, omitting Dibutylphthalate:

I ordered a second bottle of DPX New, expiration date 2025-09-30, the minimum pack size being 500 ml, and a hefty small-order surcharge on the price tag.

Do you think, that I could possibly add DBP to DPX New, at least to the old expired bottle, to stabilize the mounting medium.

LG Helmut
