How do I upgrade resolution for jenalumar microscope?
« am: März 16, 2023, 15:30:10 Nachmittag »
Dear all.

I would like to try to upgrade the resolution of the jenalumar microscope.
So, I would like to upgrade the condenser lens (apl 0.9) to apl 1.4.
We are also thinking of making and combining capacitors or adapters that can be mounted immediately.
Also, I want to know if the resolution can be increased in that way and how it affects the image quality.

Thank you for your answer and Best regards,
Changhee

Dear Changhee,

you need the condenser front lens Achr. 1,30 (304332:032.24/6) or Achr. 1,3 pol together with its matching rump optics (see right image and the arrows, green is interchangeable, red not): The rump optics of the condenser head achr. apl. 0,9 does not work together with the higher aperture front lenses! They came with their own rump optics. Sometimes, condenser front heads are offered separetely from their rump by people who are not aware of that. Such purchases are useless. Also, the early JENAVAL condensers had different threads on head and rump compared to what was offered later. The versions from 1982 - 1984 had even female and male threads reversed from the later versions! They have an engraving in white (not the silk- screen print in silver colour).

So You need this: The front and rump optics shown, are the latest versions discernible by the silver coloured silk- screen print of "Achr. 1,3" or "Achr. 1,3 pol", made until 1990. Depicted here:

Regarding the image quality: In phase contrast, the higher aperture condenser front optics Achr. 1,30 (used with self- made, modified Ph- ring stops) just gives a brighter image (factor ~ 1,8x) not much better resolved -if at all:

Marine Diatom (J. LIEDER; Mr. Heinz Fegert lege artis). JENA 250-CF Apochromat HI 100x/1,40 Phv oo/0,17-A with phase contrast and condenser head Achr. apl. 0,9 (Colour image with LED- light source made by Stephan Hiller, no image manipulation/ processing after acquisition)

In DIC there is a difference, but that would be a very lenghty story to explain here, especially what is all needed to make it work. And still, I am not sure, if it is worth all the effort ... The condenser head with N.A. 0,9 is also more than excellent for almost everything I could think of (except a few diatoms here).

Freshwater nano-flagellate Bodo angustus. Length is approx. 15 µm. JENA 250-CF Apochromat HI 100x/1,40 oo/0,17-A with DIC and condenser head Achr. 1,3 pol immersed with IMMERSOL 518 F (Colour image with PANASONIC LUMIX GX-9 and PANASONIC TTL DMW-FL 580 used as micro flash and made by Jürgen Stahlschmidt, no image manipulation/ processing after acquisition)

If You cannot access the JENAVAL Achr. 1,3 front and rump optics, a home made adapter for the much easier to get CARL ZEISS, Oberkochen condenser achr. apl. 1,40 H, DIC will also work beautiful with such a condenser on the JENAVAL in brightfield or DIC. As I have no such adapter any longer (its gone since more than 25 years), I cannot depict it for You here ...

Regards

Michael

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your help.
I'm looking for arch 1.3 condensor lens according to your advise. But. It is so difficult.

Best regards,

Dear Michael,

I found the website and sent an email, but I received a return mail saying that I couldn't find the domain. I'm frustrated because I can't make a phone call because I live in Korea.

Dear Changhee,

the JENAVAL condenser heads from that dealer are all long gone, unfortunately. But the correct contact e-mail is: info@mikroskope-online.de

And as said, the JENAVAL 250- CF DIK/ DIC does not work with the official components any longer with the JENAVAL Achr. 1,3 condenser head.

But if you have a black condenser carrier Z from CZ Oberkochen and the fitting Satzkondensor 0,32 (465267) with the achr. apl. 1,4 Pol front lens (465268) and a matching DIC- prism (e.g. condenser DIC- prism 434405, N.A. >/= 0,5; only one prism fits into this condenser at a time) and somebody makes an adapter for the female CZO condenser carrier Z- dovetail on the JENAVAL condenser carrier- dovetail, that works, as these condenser DIC- prisms are optimized for that condenser N.A. regarding their crystallography. You only have to rotate that condenser until the condenser prism orientation/ azimuth is in that unusual position, where You can detect a horizontal interference stripe (condenser prism only, without objective- sided prism engaged):

The current CZ reflected light polarizer for the Axiovert 5 MAT or the current Axioscope 5/7 models also fits to the JENAVAL as analyzer rotatable by 90° and You will need a separate, simple CZ polarizer 453600 to insert into the light exit opening (the de Senarmont DIK polarizer is not used then).

Sorry for that

Michael
